I’m sort of surprised the same sex marriage conversations are not evolving more quickly.  The long and short of it (to me) is this:

  1. We still (sort of) live in a free country.  Government should not be denying anyone rights; we all agree on that.
  2. Marriage is a sticky word – lots of religious folks want to protect it’s definition.

To me, the solution is so obvious I’m surprised we’re still talking about it.  I would love for someone to give me some real reasons with my solution explained in detail here (link) does not work for both sides.

In summary, here’s the solution: Privitise Marriage.  Get the government out of the conversation all together (State and Federal).  This would restore freedom to marriage.  This can be done a number of ways; here are two suggestions.

  • Re-write the current government marriage documents and exclude the word marriage.  Write them so that they can be used in any combination.
  • Remove the current marriage documents and don’t replace them with anything – get the government away from marriage.  We really should not need the government’s permission to get married.  I understand marriage is related to property but there are other, smarter ways around that.

IT WOULD WORK, RIGHT?

For the folks in favor of same sex marriage:

  • Equality is achieved.
  • Federal and State documents ether don’t exist, or are identical regardless if the union is same sex, or opposite sex.  The word “marriage” does not exist in government documents.
  • Religious organizations have the freedom (regardless of what state they are in) to perform same sex marriages, or not perform same sex marriages thus respecting their religious freedom.
  • Same sex couples can choose to get married at the places that choose to perform the ceremony.  It can be called anything in the world.  Party, marriage, celebration, union, lemon, whatever.

For the folks who do not support same sex marriage:

  • Marriage is protected, and can be defined by your specific religious organization.
  • Marriage is no longer a government word, and it’s name or definition will not be changed by the government.
  • Religious organizations exist that do not allow same sex marriages which are an option for membership.

BUT WHAT WOULD SCHOOLS TEACH?

Because marraige would no longer be a federal or state issue, marriage would not come up in the classroom at all.  The only thing they could really teach would be the legal documents that replace the old marriage documents (if they even need to exist) but I don’t think schools would waste valuable time teaching that.  What would they teach… where to fill in the names?  As there is no lesson on W-10’s or other government forms I’m sure the new union documents would be left out of the classroom.

OK folks, so let me have it.  How does this not resolve the issue…?

Why can’t we just be free?

September 5, 2009

The original concept of this post was going to be to do an “about Bush” section and an “about Obama” section and relating them to ‘we the people.’ I was going to write about Bush’s terrible patriot act and Obama’s failure to fix it (which was predictable). I was going to write about Bush’s bailouts and how Obama (predictably) did the same thing. I was going to write about how neither party is truly different from the other anymore – only in trivial issues. I was going to write about how both are bought and paid for and employed by the same wealthy parties and that nobody in our Government has been working for the American citizens since President John F. Kennedy.

I changed my mind however because that post was going to turn out to be incredibly long. I realized that if people truly want to know who owns their Government, the information is easily accessible. Just follow the money, and research the Federal Reserve Bank. It does not take even remote intelligence to realize that we are all being fleeced.

At first, I wanted to write about the Revolution and remind everyone why we broke free and created America. The thought of freedom – true freedom to do whatever it is that we want resonates in me very strongly. A quote I think of frequently is this “if we are only free to make good decisions, are we truly free?” I also think – if we are only free to spend two thirds of our paycheck, are we truly free? If our money is spent against our will for golden para-shoots for finance oligarchs, given as bribes or earmarks… are we truly free? If we can’t choose our schools or doctors are we truly free? If we are surveyed against our will as the Patriot Act allows, or if we can be secretly put on lists for our party affiliation are we truly free? This list could go on and on.

As you can see, writing about the fallacy of Bush, Obama, and Government could go on forever and be *almost as long, complicated, and confusing as our taxation code. Instead I just thought I’d post what I believe in, and invite readers to educate me – why are my beliefs impossible?

I believe in freedom – I believe individuals should be able to make whatever choices they want as long as those choices do not hurt another person legitimately.

I believe two consenting people should be free to marry regardless of what others think.
I don’t believe they require permission form anyone, especially the Government.
I believe non violent religion should be free to practice in any way they wish. I believe they can endorse or condemn whatever lifestyles they want no matter how others see it.

I believe people should be free to spend their money how they wish – heaven forbid if they don’t give any to charity. I pray to God we all would choose to – I know I would and do.
I believe (on average) one third of your paycheck required to the Government is far, far too much. However, if those who enjoy taxation wish to give 50% or 75% to the Government they should feel free to do so.
I believe only sales tax should be required. Income tax has only been recognized by the Supreme Court since 1913 (coincidentally the same year the Federal Reserve was created) which means that in our prime we operated without income tax and should still be able to do so.
I do not believe that people will realize that Government has destroyed everything it has touched (education, post office, medicare/cade, aamtrack, social security, the list goes on forever).
.
I believe in my fellow men and women and do not think we need to be micro-managed.
I believe these two parties are tearing us apart. Part of me believes that this is by design. If we fight with one another, we won’t fight with ‘them.’
I believe elections work like a Don King fight where both parties are puppets of the same wealthy influences.
I believe if we all truly understood freedom – live and let live – we would all see how both parties oppose us in our pursuit of the American Dream. By definition “Government” is to Govern – unfortunately it is the opposite of living freely.

I believe that the country we created has turned into the country we tried to escape from and unless we ‘wake up’ it will continue down that path. Quick example: one of the primary reasons we created America was to escape the manipulative central bank of England which was committing economic crimes against the people, much like our Federal Reserve Bank does today.

Sadly, I don’t believe that anyone will read this or anything like this.
Even more depressing; I don’t believe anyone will even think these thoughts of true freedom.
I think people will watch football and American Idol and entertain themselves to death while their civil liberties and their freedom is stripped away from under them.

It’s been said that people do not truly want freedom, they just want to be well fed and entertained. I do not believe this is true, but I believe we are too entertained to know that what we do truly desire is freedom.

To anyone that made it to the end, thanks for letting me vent. If anyone can help me understand why the freedom to choose our own lives and paths won’t work please explain it to me.

This is a spin-off of my personal blog. I’ve decided this topic necessitates it’s own blog. Here’s the basic idea:

We are exposed to over 5,000 a day – what’s even more frightening is that it’s working. No matter how little money we have in our lives, we STILL give money to the super rich every day. Sometimes it’s paying for an overpriced movie ticket. Other times it’s going to an athletic event or concert for a mega-artist. Meanwhile the things that truly matter in life are falling to the wayside. Consider this.

If you like football – play football with your family as opposed to giving more money to the ultra rich athletes.

If you like music – go to the local coffee shop or a concert for an artist who is not already rich.

If you like movies – support the local community theatre, local film festival, or independent theatre.

There is a misconception out there that the best entertainment comes from the big companies. Take a look at my previous post.  It lists studio films and independent films – I’m sure after reading it you’ll give independent films much more credit.  Don’t let the studios brainwash you.  The same applies to the music industry as well – overall, the mega-artists ARE NOT THE MOST TALENTED MUSICIANS – they are simply hotter.

This blog is designed to remind you that YOU are valuable.  YOU are an important contribution to this world and you have an obligation to see that in your neighbors as well.  It’s vital to our sanity, and to our souls that we stop idolizing studio-backed talent.
